Shek Kip Mei Estate is the first public housing estate built in Hong Kong. It originated from the resettlement and public housing programme launched by the government after the Shek Kip Mei squatter fire on Christmas Day in 1953. The first batch of eight six-storey “Type I” resettlement blocks was completed in 1954, marking the beginning of public housing development in Hong Kong. Between 1954 and 1962, additional seven-storey blocks were constructed, and redevelopment and reconstruction works began in the 1970s. The recording was made at the playground between Blocks 21 and 24, where the sounds of children and teenagers playing basketball and shouting can be heard.
